Empowering Change: A New Online Substance Use Training Course for Voluntary, Health and Social Care Staff

Dr Emma Williamson

As January draws to a close, many people who embraced Dry January are beginning to reflect on the experience. For some, it’s been a chance to reset habits, explore healthier routines, and notice the benefits of change. For others, it might have sparked a realisation about the challenges of maintaining those changes longer-term.

Woman empowered raising hands in the sky

For health and social care professionals, these reflections are a reminder of the pivotal role we play in supporting individuals navigating their own journeys with substance use and that it is a year-long role, not just a New Year focus. That’s why at aneemo we are thrilled to announce the launch of our much anticipated new online video-training course designed specifically for those working with substance use.

This course on “Understanding and Working with Substance Misuse” is taught by leading substance use experts Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Dr Charlotte Lemaigre, and Clinical Nurse Specialist, Owain Ashworth.

This structured and practical CPD accredited course will support you to:

  • Learning about the prevalence, context and problems associated with substance use disorders.
  • Develop your understanding on how to comprehensively assess and formulate substance use in an individualised and person-centred way.
  • Practical techniques to guide your use of psychosocial interventions that can support people with substance use disorder to achieve wellbeing, maintain recovery and sustain long term behavioural change.

This course equips you with the tools to guide and support individuals as they make and sustain positive changes. With modules covering an understanding of the causes and risk factors of substance use; identifying common types of substances, their effects and treatment options; developing your assessment and formulation skills including using the biopsychosocial formulation; compare different treatment models, including harm reduction, medication-assisted treatment, and understand the role of brief advice and psychological therapies like Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Following this course, you’ll gain practical skills to foster hope and empowerment. Whether you’re working with individuals considering their first steps toward change or those wanting greater encouragement, this training will deepen your confidence and expertise.

Health and social care staff commonly tell us that supporting individuals who have a history of offending presents unique challenges. These challenges stem from the complex systems as well as multiple needs that often accompany a history of offending. It is well documented that people in contact with the criminal justice system can have high levels of mental health and substance use difficulties, histories of trauma and adversity, homelessness, and experience barriers in social inclusion. Individuals may also struggle with accessing education, employment, and stable housing, creating a cycle that can be difficult to break.

If, like myself, your reflections on your new year's resolutions usually result in a sense of guilt and disappointment that these new goals have already started to slip – rest assured, you are not alone.

This years’ 10th of October marks an important day in highlighting and raising awareness of how a community can comprehensively support its members. Not only does World Mental Health Day fall upon this day, but the date is shared with the recognition of World Homeless Day also. The 10th of October therefore creates a powerful and special opportunity for open and critical discussion into how we, as a society, can best support those who are struggling and effectively drive political change to support those facing multiple disadvantages.
