5 reasons why you should volunteer

aneemo

Today is international volunteer day, and we wanted to highlight 5 reasons why everyone should volunteer at least once in their life. There are many ways you can volunteer to help others, and the best thing is that not only will make a change in someone’s life, but it will also change yours and give you that rewarding feeling.

1. Meet new people

If you are new in the city or you are just looking for new friends, volunteering is a great option for you. Joining a community organisation will enable you to meet other people with the same interests and values as you.

2. Change someone’s life

When the volunteering activity involves other people, you are making a difference to change someone’s day and to some extent, even someone’s life. There are people who really need help or even just company, and who if it wasn’t for the volunteers, wouldn’t get the support they need. Simple actions can make a really big change.

3. Grow personally and professionally

There are loads of different activities where you can volunteer, and any of them will help you grow personally and professionally. You will learn a lot from others and you will be more comprehensive and understanding. You will also help boost your career, as nowadays recruiters value candidates having volunteering experience.

4. Become more openminded

Volunteering to help other people will alow you become more openminded. You learn to be more patient and you will probably value more what you have. You will also become more empathetic and you will be able to see things from a different perspective.

5. Gain new skills

When volunteering you usually have to adapt to the charity or community you are working with. That means you will learn new ways to face some situations and you will also get advice from professionals. That way you will gain new skills that will be useful for you in the future.

At aneemo we deliver training to the volunteering sector to help them become more professional and to give them the opportunity to provide a better service to the people they are helping. As January draws to a close, many people who embraced Dry January are beginning to reflect on the experience. For some, it’s been a chance to reset habits, explore healthier routines, and notice the benefits of change. For others, it might have sparked a realisation about the challenges of maintaining those changes longer-term.

Health and social care staff commonly tell us that supporting individuals who have a history of offending presents unique challenges. These challenges stem from the complex systems as well as multiple needs that often accompany a history of offending. It is well documented that people in contact with the criminal justice system can have high levels of mental health and substance use difficulties, histories of trauma and adversity, homelessness, and experience barriers in social inclusion. Individuals may also struggle with accessing education, employment, and stable housing, creating a cycle that can be difficult to break.

This years’ 10th of October marks an important day in highlighting and raising awareness of how a community can comprehensively support its members. Not only does World Mental Health Day fall upon this day, but the date is shared with the recognition of World Homeless Day also. The 10th of October therefore creates a powerful and special opportunity for open and critical discussion into how we, as a society, can best support those who are struggling and effectively drive political change to support those facing multiple disadvantages.
