Homeless and mental health

aneemo

Evidence shows that there is a link between homelessness and mental health problems.

Today is world mental health day, a day to raise awareness about mental health and give a voice to those suffering from a mental distress.

Homelessness has a major impact on mental health not only because of the stress, loneliness and traumatic experience of being homeless, but also because of the correlative relationship between trauma and mental health problems which can lead to a path of homelessness. This is why serious mental health issues like bipolar, schizophrenia and complex trauma are more common for those experiencing homelessness.

We believe there is still a lot of work to do to end homelessness and help those rough sleeping or unstably house who have mental health problems. At aneemo we are working hard to support not only these groups of vulnerable people but also the staff working with them, delivering Psychologically Informed Environments and Trauma Informed Care training programmes.

Today, we would like to mention these five stats from recent researches in the UK, to highlight the urgent need there is in this country to help people address the mental health needs that precede and perpetuate homelessness; giving them an opportunity to rebuild their lives and get off the streets.

1.Four in five homeless people suffer from a mental health problem.

2.Among homeless people in the UK, 44% have been diagnosed with a mental health condition.

3.The 80% of rough sleepers who died in London in 2017 had mental health needs compared with 29% in 2010.

4.26% of homeless people in the UK said mental health problems is the reason for being homeless.

5.The 40% of the surveyed rough sleepers with psychiatric issues had attempted suicide. In fact, a homeless person is nine times more likely to commit suicide than the general population.

The statistics above indicates a rapid increase in the number of mental health issues among homeless people in the UK. Which means we should take more responsibility and between all of us and support those who come in contact and work with the homeless in this country.

As January draws to a close, many people who embraced Dry January are beginning to reflect on the experience. For some, it’s been a chance to reset habits, explore healthier routines, and notice the benefits of change. For others, it might have sparked a realisation about the challenges of maintaining those changes longer-term.

Health and social care staff commonly tell us that supporting individuals who have a history of offending presents unique challenges. These challenges stem from the complex systems as well as multiple needs that often accompany a history of offending. It is well documented that people in contact with the criminal justice system can have high levels of mental health and substance use difficulties, histories of trauma and adversity, homelessness, and experience barriers in social inclusion. Individuals may also struggle with accessing education, employment, and stable housing, creating a cycle that can be difficult to break.

This years’ 10th of October marks an important day in highlighting and raising awareness of how a community can comprehensively support its members. Not only does World Mental Health Day fall upon this day, but the date is shared with the recognition of World Homeless Day also. The 10th of October therefore creates a powerful and special opportunity for open and critical discussion into how we, as a society, can best support those who are struggling and effectively drive political change to support those facing multiple disadvantages.
