#RandomActsofKindnessDay

Dr Emma Williamson, Consultant Clinical Psychologist

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day - February 17, 2022

Everyone can use more #kindness in their lives. Scientific evidence shows the positive effects we experience doing kind acts for others as well as receiving them or even witnessing #kindness in action. The #RandomActsofKindness movement can involve us all and takes little to no planning to tune into #kindness and brighten someone’s day.

After all, knowing you have done a good deed will most definitely brighten your own day!

What will you do today to share the care?

We've listed a few little ideas below – let us know what you give a go!

- Call a friend to say hello

- Pay it Backward: buy coffee for the person behind you in line.

- Compliment the first three people you talk to today.

- Send a positive text message to five different people right now.

- Post inspirational sticky notes around your neighbourhood.

- Donate old towels or blankets to an animal rescue centre.

- Surprise a neighbour with freshly baked cookies.

- Leave spare change in a charity collection pot.

- Leave a note on someone’s car telling them how awesome they parked.

- Write a kind message on your mirror with a dry erase marker for yourself or a family member.

- Smile at five strangers.

- Volunteer at a charity

- Send a gratitude email to a co-worker who deserves more recognition.

- Practice self-kindness and spend 30 minutes doing something you love.

- Give away stuff for free on Facebook or gumtree.

- Write a gratitude list in the morning and again in the evening.

- Offer to babysit or dog walk for free.

- Zoom call a friend you haven’t seen for ages or call an elderly relative.

- Return a shopping trolly.

What will you do?

Set yourself an intention and share the love by encouraging others to do the same.

As January draws to a close, many people who embraced Dry January are beginning to reflect on the experience. For some, it’s been a chance to reset habits, explore healthier routines, and notice the benefits of change. For others, it might have sparked a realisation about the challenges of maintaining those changes longer-term.

Health and social care staff commonly tell us that supporting individuals who have a history of offending presents unique challenges. These challenges stem from the complex systems as well as multiple needs that often accompany a history of offending. It is well documented that people in contact with the criminal justice system can have high levels of mental health and substance use difficulties, histories of trauma and adversity, homelessness, and experience barriers in social inclusion. Individuals may also struggle with accessing education, employment, and stable housing, creating a cycle that can be difficult to break.

This years’ 10th of October marks an important day in highlighting and raising awareness of how a community can comprehensively support its members. Not only does World Mental Health Day fall upon this day, but the date is shared with the recognition of World Homeless Day also. The 10th of October therefore creates a powerful and special opportunity for open and critical discussion into how we, as a society, can best support those who are struggling and effectively drive political change to support those facing multiple disadvantages.

Aneemo is pleased to be working in partnership with Westminster City Council and Groundswell to develop a three tiered PIE training programme, launching in early 2023 .
