The Rough Sleeping Innovation Fund is an award supported by the Mayor of London with the aim to help address those working with the homeless.

Rough sleeping is an ever-growing problem in cities and something London has been addressing. From 2016 to 2017, the number of people sleeping on the streets increased by 18% in London and 14% across the rest of England.

In its second year, the Rough Sleeping Innovation Fund (RSIF) is a grant supported by The Mayor of London, its aim is to help address rough sleeping and the problems facing those living on London’s streets by backing initiatives set up to provide them with support. Backed by City of Westminster Council and London Borough of Lambeth, aneemo is a proud recipient of a grant from the Rough Sleeping Innovation Fund (RSIF). aneemo is delighted to have the opportunity to make a difference and to address the issue of mental health in those affected by homelessness.

The grant will allow aneemo to offer a free 18-month web-based training programme. The programme is designed to enable easy access to training resources for the many people working tirelessly to assist those in desperate need, across all boroughs in London. Employing a state of the art Learning Management System (LMS / E-Learning), aneemo will enable pan-London professionals from all sectors to access quality training and advice on dealing with the complex mental health issues impacting on London’s homeless community.

Whether working for an outreach team, charity, church group or mental health or social care aneemo will provide a free 18-month long course provided using LMS technology to all sectors and groups that come into contact with rough sleepers. Courses range from stand-alone modules involving several hours of study to more extensive programmes with multiple modules released in bitesize sections to support your learning and engagement with the topic. Using a modular system, those who are tackling these complicated issues in the vulnerable head-on will be provided with comprehensive and targeted advice and training.

As January draws to a close, many people who embraced Dry January are beginning to reflect on the experience. For some, it’s been a chance to reset habits, explore healthier routines, and notice the benefits of change. For others, it might have sparked a realisation about the challenges of maintaining those changes longer-term.

Health and social care staff commonly tell us that supporting individuals who have a history of offending presents unique challenges. These challenges stem from the complex systems as well as multiple needs that often accompany a history of offending. It is well documented that people in contact with the criminal justice system can have high levels of mental health and substance use difficulties, histories of trauma and adversity, homelessness, and experience barriers in social inclusion. Individuals may also struggle with accessing education, employment, and stable housing, creating a cycle that can be difficult to break.

This years’ 10th of October marks an important day in highlighting and raising awareness of how a community can comprehensively support its members. Not only does World Mental Health Day fall upon this day, but the date is shared with the recognition of World Homeless Day also. The 10th of October therefore creates a powerful and special opportunity for open and critical discussion into how we, as a society, can best support those who are struggling and effectively drive political change to support those facing multiple disadvantages.
